Welcome to the very first blog post at www.abacus4kids.com.au! We are thrilled to welcome you to our community of young calculators, confident thinkers, and future leaders.
In a world filled with smartphones, tablets, and advanced calculator apps, you might be wondering: Why are we teaching Australian kids a math tool that is thousands of years old?
The answer is simple: The abacus isn’t just an ancient calculator—it is a modern brain-builder.
While digital devices do the thinking for your child, the abacus teaches your child how to think. Here is why this tactile little tool is making a massive comeback in homes and classrooms across Australia.

1. It Turns Abstract Numbers into Something Real
For many young kids, looking at written numbers like 7 or 14 is like looking at a foreign language. It’s abstract. The abacus changes the game by making numbers physical. By sliding beads up and down, children can physically see, touch, and feel the concepts of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. It builds an rock-solid foundation of "number sense" that worksheets just can't match.
2. It Builds Flash-Fast Mental Math (Anzan)
As students practice, an amazing transformation happens. They transition from physically moving the beads to visualising the abacus in their minds. This is known as Anzan (mental abacus). When an abacus-trained child hears a math problem, they mentally slide the beads at lightning speed. Before you know it, they are solving equations faster than an adult can type them into a smartphone!
3. It Boosts Focus, Memory, and Confidence
Learning the abacus requires concentration, rhythm, and accuracy. By training regularly, children naturally increase their attention spans and improve their photographic memory. Best of all, when a child realizes they can tackle big math problems entirely in their head, their overall academic confidence skyrockets. They stop saying "I'm bad at math" and start saying "I can solve this!"
4. The Australian Curriculum & The Abacus
While the Australian Curriculum highly emphasises problem-solving and digital fluency, it also explicitly highlights the importance of mental computation strategies. The abacus aligns perfectly with this by giving children a structured, reliable mental framework to calculate quickly and accurately under pressure.
